Chapter Nine

Tyler was having an epically shitty week. On Monday, he’d been cursed out by an over-adventurous mom who’d led her kids on an off-trail escapade, gotten lost, and then needed to be rescued. Afterward, she’d ranted at length about how the forestry department should spend its limited budget on plastering signs all over the woods with maps, like the ones at the mall that showed your location with little red dots and you are here designations. Tyler had never rolled his eyes so hard in his life.

On Tuesday, he’d made a rookie mistake and stuck his arm in poison oak. By Thursday night, he’d broken out in a nasty, itchy rash. He’d covered it in hydrocortisone cream and bandaged it, but his forearm still itched like hell.

As if that wasn’t enough for one week, he’d woken up congested and achy on Friday. He’d taken some over-the-counter medicine and gone in to work anyway in the hopes of walking it off, but that had been a mistake. He’d felt worse as the day progressed. Then after lunch, there had been another rash of portable meth lab paraphernalia discovered by some kids over by the lake. Their parents had been understandably upset and taken their anger out on him until the police had arrived and taken over. He hoped the assholes polluting the forest were caught soon, before someone really got hurt.

All he wanted was a hot shower and his bed when he dragged his tired bones home on Friday evening. As much as he hated to admit it, he didn’t think he was going to be up for company over the weekend. He didn’t want to cancel their plans with Jenna, but he also didn’t want her to catch whatever cold he’d picked up.

He walked into the house and made a beeline toward the bathroom. Despite his energy being depleted, there was no way he would crawl into bed while still sweaty and covered in half the forest.

Dylan popped his head out of the office. “Hey, Tyler, you want to—” He paused, his amber eyes widening. “Are you okay? You look like hell.”

“I feel like it, too. I’m going to shower and go to bed. I don’t think I’m up for anything else. Can you call Jenna and apologize for me?”

“Yeah, man. I’ll take care of everything. Is there anything I can do for you? I could run out and get some cold medicine or something. Whatever you want.”

“Nah. I just need to crash.” With that thought in mind, he continued on to the bathroom.

Dylan called after him. “Let me know if you need anything, okay?”

“I will,” Tyler answered, although he had no intention of asking for help. He was fine. He just needed to sleep it off.
